Report on The potential of on-farm biofuel production

The energy flows of European farms were studied in this paper. The energy balance of two crops that can offer edible oil or oil for energy production was presented. The rape seed is one crop most adapted to the North of Europe and sunflower for the South. The energy balance showed that the energy consumption for production is generally lower than the energy output giving a positive net energy a prerequisite to use them for energy production.

Definition of an interface for a knowledge repository

The knowledge repository, identified as a system for delivering agricultural standards represented as encoded rules, consists of three primary elements. These elements are the catalogue server interface, through which the actual rule servers are discovered, the rule server interface and the encoding schema of the agricultural standards as rules. The encoding schema was specified as part of FutureFarm Deliverable 4.1.1. This document describes the server and catalogue interfaces and contains formal specifications as appendices.

Specification of material and information flow

Agriculture and farmers face a great challenge in effectively manage information both internally and externally in order to improve the economic and operational efficiency of operations, reduce environmental impact and comply with various documentation requirements. In order to meet this challenge, the flow of information between decision processes must be analysed and modelled as a prerequisite for the subsequent design, construction and implementation of situated information systems.

Machine Readable Encoding for Definitions of Agricultural Crop Production and Farm Management Standards

This document describes the initial draft of a machine-readable encoding format for the definition of agricultural crop production and farm management standards. These standards may be:

Analysis of External Drivers

The purpose of this report is to analyze external drivers that could have a significant impact on knowledge management methods and on farming systems as a whole for the next 25 years. The analysis was conducted on the basis of literature review and the personal judgment of the expert authors. For each external driver, the authors provided a description which also included recent data and a historical review of the driver.

System description of proposed Farm Management Information System (FMIS)

The outcome of this work package includes a description of a farm management information system which allows more intelligent decisions about the use of different input sources, treatments and information management systems (incl. precision farming systems) for a number of crop rotation systems. To achieve this, it was decided to assess the cost structure and potential benefit for these crop rotation systems for different technologies. Focus is on commonly produced crops in different European regions including wheat, rape seed, sugar beets, maize and other cereals, cotton or other crops.

System analysis and definition of system boundaries

The objectives of deliverable 3.1 are to identify the scope of a farm management information system (FMIS) and identifies the conceptual system framework, which will guide the evolutionary process of analysing the information flow; define the databases, the knowledge encoding, the requirements for on-line control, etc. The specific output from deliverable 3.1 becomes the preliminary scope and system boundaries and will function as the starting point from which the expectations and constraining requirements to the system can be further explored.

Social organization of farmers’ decision-making

As the term “Social organization” is not sufficiently established in agricultural literature a different term  should be chosen for a possible publication. The present working title is: “The role of communication and cooperation in the adoption of Precision Farming in Europe”. Within the study the term “Social organization” is used as an umbrella term to describe different modes of communication and cooperation between farmers and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

Management strategies and practices

Many farmers claim that their main purpose is to make money, but that is too simplistic. Nowadays sustainability and environmental issues are becoming more important. Practices are the management options that apply to a particular sector. Operational elements describe the particular field operations. To be able to manage these forms of complex variability, a co-ordinated approach is required, integrating personal strategies, farm management goals and field operations. The strategies should reflect the values and preferences of the manager in the form of farmmanagement goals.

Compliance to standards specifications

The future farm should be complied with standards to ensure competitiveness in international markets as well as sound environmental standards. A number of standards are available at Global, European, National, Regional and Terrestrial level. The standards are divided into voluntary and compulsory standards and each farm; region; country has differently implemented the directives, regulations and other standards that they have to comply with. This work package has investigated five  major standards: Cross Compliance; Organic Farming; Integrated Crop Management; Water Policy; INSPIRE.
