Screening of management standards and compliance to standards

This report is divided in two sections. The first section gives a cross-country comparative panorama of the implementation of cross compliance standards, evidencing the different agro-environment settings, land use patterns and environmentally sensitive areas. The second section presents a categorization of the standards and their vocabularies.

Set of Requirements specifications for a multifunctional Farm Portal

The role of a Farm Portal is to communicate the multifunctional farm of “tomorrow” of being environmentally and socially friendly, energetic autonomous and enhancing the rural economy will be analyzed. The farmer needs to do documentation but also needs to get benefits out of the new technologies; moreover the benefits must motivate him to use these technologies.

Social organization of farmers’ decision-making

As the term “Social organization” is not sufficiently established in agricultural literature a different term  should be chosen for a possible publication. The present working title is: “The role of communication and cooperation in the adoption of Precision Farming in Europe”. Within the study the term “Social organization” is used as an umbrella term to describe different modes of communication and cooperation between farmers and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

Management strategies and practices

Many farmers claim that their main purpose is to make money, but that is too simplistic. Nowadays sustainability and environmental issues are becoming more important. Practices are the management options that apply to a particular sector. Operational elements describe the particular field operations. To be able to manage these forms of complex variability, a co-ordinated approach is required, integrating personal strategies, farm management goals and field operations. The strategies should reflect the values and preferences of the manager in the form of farmmanagement goals.

Compliance to standards specifications

The future farm should be complied with standards to ensure competitiveness in international markets as well as sound environmental standards. A number of standards are available at Global, European, National, Regional and Terrestrial level. The standards are divided into voluntary and compulsory standards and each farm; region; country has differently implemented the directives, regulations and other standards that they have to comply with. This work package has investigated five  major standards: Cross Compliance; Organic Farming; Integrated Crop Management; Water Policy; INSPIRE.

Work Packages

Work in FutureFarm is divided into 8 Work Packages (WPs), each of which is managed by a work package leader:
