Electronic knowledge management and transfer for agriculture

FutureFarm WP 4 deals with the task “Knowledge Management in the FMIS of tomorrow”. The set of deliverables splits this task in different subtasks. FutureFarm deliverables of the D4.1 section are mainly about specifying an encoding for agricultural production standards, which serves as a data exchange format for structured, machine readable documents published by some authority or similar consisting sets of rules which farmers may adhere to.

Proof-of-concept implementations of client software, including Rules App

FutureFarm deliverable D4.1.1 specifies an encoding for agricultural production standards, which serves as a data exchange format for structured, machine readable documents published by some authority or similar consisting sets of rules which farmers may adhere to. Deliverable D4.2 specifies interfaces for a catalogue and rule service in order to discover and distribute these standards.

Machine-readable encoding for definitions of Management Strategies

WP 4 of FutureFarm is mainly focussed on the Integration of knowledge for compliance to Management Standards into Farm Information Systems. These external Management Standards are published by third parties and explicit decisions by the farm manager are more or less restricted to choose which of the voluntary standards and private labels the farm should comply to. Based on a “Model of decision-making and information flows for information-intensive agriculture” by S. Fountas et al.

A short animation explaining some of the concepts developed in WP4 and how they may be applied to assist farmers is available on YouTube in English and German. The English version is also shown below:

Specification of a Rules App to handle compliance assessment based on knowledge from repositories

Previous deliverables from FutureFarm WP4 have defined an XML representation for agricultural management and production standards (D4.1.1) and two web-services, a catalogue and a rules server, allowing the definitions of the standards to be automatically retrieved via the Internet (D4.2). This deliverable provides the definition of a further component of the system which is being developed in order to manage knowledge of agricultural rules within Farm Management Information Systems.

Machine-readable encoding for definitions of data required to assess compliance to agr. management and crop production standards

In order to reliably assess compliance to agricultural management and crop production standards and regulations, a large body of data is required. In order that farmers may gather the correct data to self-check compliance, and that they can produce the necessary data in order to proove compliance to controlling bodies, it is desirable, or even essential, that the exact data required be explicitly and unambiguously defined.
Although this aim is easily defined, no simple solution is available. Two central problems may be identified:

Prototype Rules Viewer

Within the scope of the project, specific focus and efforts were directed at developing systems and mechanisms so that EU regulations and standards can be stored in a machine-readable and structured form, and be retrieved by a digital Farm Management Information System (FMIS) for further processing and checking in an automated way.
