Final report and documentation specifications of FMIS

During the course of the FutureFarm project, actors and information flows, usage processes and data elements have been modelled and analysed, and functional requirements of FMIS have been determined. This resulting deliverable outlines the system elements and requirements for the proposed FMIS as an integrated and complex set of specifications depending on the farm production type, level of automation and inherent business processes.

These specifications have included:

Specification of system architecture

Following the determination of the user requirements and the functionalities, the technological infrastructure of the FMIS must be selected. It can be concluded that a single proprietary monolithic software system cannot meet all the identified requirements, and thus, a web-based approach to the implementation of an FMIS that fulfils these additional requirements are presented. By adopting such an approach, the system has a so called core FMIS that includes basic functionalities (like FMIS logic) and a central database.

Functional requirements of the derived information system

The various functional features required from FMIS are derived based on user-centric information modelling derived. The functional requirements for the services involved in the fertilisation case are presented. In a similar manner, functional requirements are derived for the services participating in the remaining tasks in arable farming (tillage, seeding, spraying, irrigation and harvesting).

Information models specifying usage processes and data elements

In previous deliverables, the information flows and relevant input data were given for the strategic, tactical and operational planning of the fertiliser operation, as well as its execution and evaluation. The information flow diagrams included the actors and usage processes involved in the overall operation, and specified which information must be encoded in the system, provided by partner/actors, and produced by the system.

Preliminary report on knowledge and information to be encoded

In earlier work of WP3 Analysis and specification of knowledge based farm management, the system boundaries for a novel Farm Management Information System (FMIS) have been defined as well as specification of material and information flows. Information flow diagrams for six field tasks were constructed and reported in WP3 deliverable 3.2. The next task in WP3 is to define the knowledge and information from the flow diagrams to be encoded in WP4. The developed flow diagrams do not commit yet to any particular technology or information format.

Specification of material and information flow

Agriculture and farmers face a great challenge in effectively manage information both internally and externally in order to improve the economic and operational efficiency of operations, reduce environmental impact and comply with various documentation requirements. In order to meet this challenge, the flow of information between decision processes must be analysed and modelled as a prerequisite for the subsequent design, construction and implementation of situated information systems.

System analysis and definition of system boundaries

The objectives of deliverable 3.1 are to identify the scope of a farm management information system (FMIS) and identifies the conceptual system framework, which will guide the evolutionary process of analysing the information flow; define the databases, the knowledge encoding, the requirements for on-line control, etc. The specific output from deliverable 3.1 becomes the preliminary scope and system boundaries and will function as the starting point from which the expectations and constraining requirements to the system can be further explored.
