Initial costs structure and factor productivity-Potential savings/benefits from better precision farming and information managem

This paper describes the initial costs structure and potential benefits and savings from different precision farming technologies and farm information management systems (FIMS) in arable farming. Focus is on the potential costs and benefits at the farm level of different intelligent and information-intensive systems used in the production of commonly grown crops. So far most of these commercial and pre-commercial systems have been applied in cereal production, but for some of these systems they may be adapted for use in other cropping systems.

Second Periodic Report for FutureFarm (2009)

This is the second year report (Jan to Dec 2009) of the FP7 project FutureFarm (212117) ‘Integration of Farm Management Information Systems to support real‐time management decisions and compliance of management standards’

Machine-readable encoding for definitions of data required to assess compliance to agr. management and crop production standards

In order to reliably assess compliance to agricultural management and crop production standards and regulations, a large body of data is required. In order that farmers may gather the correct data to self-check compliance, and that they can produce the necessary data in order to proove compliance to controlling bodies, it is desirable, or even essential, that the exact data required be explicitly and unambiguously defined.
Although this aim is easily defined, no simple solution is available. Two central problems may be identified:

Electronic knowledge management and transfer for agriculture

FutureFarm WP 4 deals with the task “Knowledge Management in the FMIS of tomorrow”. The set of deliverables splits this task in different subtasks. FutureFarm deliverables of the D4.1 section are mainly about specifying an encoding for agricultural production standards, which serves as a data exchange format for structured, machine readable documents published by some authority or similar consisting sets of rules which farmers may adhere to.

System description of proposed Farm Management Information System (FMIS)

The outcome of this work package includes a description of a farm management information system which allows more intelligent decisions about the use of different input sources, treatments and information management systems (incl. precision farming systems) for a number of crop rotation systems. To achieve this, it was decided to assess the cost structure and potential benefit for these crop rotation systems for different technologies. Focus is on commonly produced crops in different European regions including wheat, rape seed, sugar beets, maize and other cereals, cotton or other crops.
